Why Rattan Furniture is Special

Rattan furniture has made a huge comeback in recent years, largely due to embracing craftsmanship, natural materials and turning away from mass produced furniture. Alter London’s new rattan collection celebrates the glory of handmade techniques and iconic mid-century design. These beautiful woven rattan pieces add texture, nature and warmth to indoors or outdoors, and fit in with any style.

How is Rattan Furniture Made?

Each rattan piece is handmade carefully by hand by skilled craftspeople from natural rattan grown in Indonesia. As one of the fastest growing materials for furniture production, these rattan forests are regenerated within five to seven years, absorbing CO2 and increasing clean air.

To create the stunning shapes of rattan furniture, large rattan poles are steamed enabling them to be bent and shaped into the design. Depending on the complexity of the design, the weaving of the seat and back can take up to a few days to complete, and rattan ‘peel’ is added to neatly decorate the joins of the furniture. The result is a unique and natural piece demonstrating the amazing skill and care required.

Styling Rattan Indoors

The wonderful thing about rattan is how versatile it is, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living. While rattan is perfect for summer with its laidback natural style, it can also be made delightfully cosy by adding a cushion, throw or sheepskin. For a smarter look, choose a rattan sofa or chair with a fitted cushion seat and coordinating throw pillows.

In a more modern or contemporary setting, a piece like the Fox Chair or Albi Ottoman can make a stunning statement and contrast against sleeker furniture. Using painted rattan such as the Nanny Rocking Chair in Black can also add an extra chic edge to the natural material.

Styling Rattan Outdoors

Rattan is a practical, comfortable and extremely stylish solution to patio furniture. For a formal look choose squarer pieces in pairs to mirror each other, with a coordinating coffee table or ottoman.

As a statement piece, a swing chair instantly conjures up chic retro vibes and is especially inviting when styled with a beautiful cushion or sheepskin.

When using rattan outdoors, always follow the instructions of the manufacturer to best take care of the natural material. The Alu-Rattan range consists of a strong aluminium frame woven with Artfibre, which can withstand all weather conditions and is therefore suitable for the garden, terrace or balcony. Other pieces may only withstand a light rain and should be stored indoors over colder seasons.
